Norway Commits Over 25 Million Kroner to Rescue and Repatriate Ukrainian Children Abducted by Russia

Norway's Financial Support for Ukraine

According to Рубрика — Політика: Norway has pledged more than 25 million Norwegian kroner (over 2.6 million USD) to aid in locating and returning Ukrainian children forcibly deported by Russia. This funding will also assist Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians who are either detained or have lost contact with their families due to the ongoing conflict. The funds will be channeled through UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Out of this total, 15 million kroner are allocated to UNICEF’s efforts focused on reintegrating deported Ukrainian children and tracing those who have gone missing. Norway’s overall humanitarian contribution to UNICEF’s work in Ukraine sums up to 132 million kroner. Additionally, 10 million kroner will support the Red Cross’s Central Tracing Agency.

Upcoming Conference and Future Initiatives

Norway is also co-hosting a conference in Toronto on September 28–29 dedicated to addressing the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children and the broader humanitarian impacts of the war. Espen Barth Eide emphasized during the event that

“Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine has resulted in grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. We must continue to highlight these issues and provide assistance to those Ukrainians affected by the conflict.”

Furthermore, Norway has signed a declaration to deepen cooperation with Ukraine in defense, energy, and resilience sectors. In 2025, Norway will allocate 1.5 billion kroner to purchase gas for electricity and heating production in Ukraine. The country plans to maintain its support for Ukraine through the Nansen program at around 9 billion USD by 2027. Norway will also contribute a $200 million package for Patriot missile procurement and provide 1 billion kroner in 2026 via the EU’s Ukraine Facility to back Ukrainian government institutions and reforms.

These initiatives aim to:

• assist in locating missing persons;
• facilitate the return of displaced individuals to their homes;
• support rehabilitation and reintegration for those affected by the war.
