Norway with Haaland's double defeated Brazil in the 1/8 finals of the 2026 World Cup
One of the biggest sensations of the 2026 World Cup occurred. The Norway national team defeated Brazil 2:1 in the 1/8 finals and reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in history. The main hero of the match was Erling Haaland, who scored a double. RBC Ukraine reports.
Norway - Brazil: Haaland determined the fate of the match
The match started at a high pace. Already in the third minute, Patrick Berg sent the ball into the Brazil net, but after a review, the referee called offside and canceled the goal.
Soon, the Brazilians had a chance to open the scoring. After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, but Norway's goalkeeper, Ørjan Nyland, saved Bruno Guimarães' shot. This became the first missed penalty in the Brazilian midfielder's career.
Before the break, Brazil had the advantage, but Nyland saved his team several times after dangerous shots from Danilo, Vinícius Júnior, and Guimarães.
The turning point came in the second half. In the 79th minute, Andreas Schjelderup made an accurate cross, and Erling Haaland scored with a header.
In the 90th minute, the same duo orchestrated another successful attack, and Haaland scored a double, effectively securing Norway's advancement to the next round.
Brazil scored their only goal in stoppage time. In the 90+10th minute, Neymar converted a penalty, marking his 80th goal for the national team. However, the five-time world champions could not save the match.
2026 World Cup: Norway's historic success and Haaland's new records
The victory over Brazil was historic for the Norwegian national team. For the first time in its history, the team will play in the World Cup quarter-finals. Previously, their best results were making it to the 1/8 finals in 1938 and 1998.
The defeat also continued Brazil's unsuccessful streak. Since the 2006 World Cup, the 'Seleção' has now been eliminated in the playoffs seven consecutive times after matches against European teams.
At the same time, Erling Haaland set several achievements. The forward became the eighth European footballer in history to score in each of his first four matches at the World Cup, and he also extended his scoring streak for the national team to 14 official matches in a row, during which he scored 26 goals.
