Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Combined Assault

According to Главком: On February 12, Russia launched a combined missile and drone attack against Ukraine's energy infrastructure. In response, Ukrenergo, the national power company, implemented emergency and preventative power cuts across several regions. This action resulted in blackouts for consumers in Kyiv, as well as the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa oblasts. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to target civilian infrastructure, now in its third year.

Regional Impact and Ongoing Damage

The overnight assault caused severe damage to power networks and generation facilities. This led to further blackouts in the Kharkiv region due to damage along the frontline. Additionally, 11 settlements in the Zakarpattia region experienced outages due to severe weather conditions. Repair crews from regional energy companies are already working to restore the damaged lines.

Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, publicly appealed to Ukraine's Energy Minister, Denys Shmyhal, and Ukrenergo. He emphasized that the city is enduring its fourth winter under constant bombardment. Terekhov stressed that Kharkiv's energy infrastructure has suffered unprecedented destruction, with thousands of buildings experiencing emergency heating outages while systems operate beyond their limits.

This latest strike continues Russia's strategy of destabilizing Ukraine's energy grid, a tactic that is especially critical during winter when demand for electricity and heating peaks. Restoring the damaged networks requires significant effort and resources, threatening not only energy stability but also the social welfare of residents in affected areas. The duration and intensity of these attacks underscore the urgent need for enhanced security and protective measures for Ukraine's critical infrastructure.
