A New System for Patient Price Transparency

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian government is launching a new initiative to inform patients about medication costs. A QR code printed on the paper slip accompanying an electronic prescription will now provide price transparency for pharmaceuticals. This system is designed to supply patients with information on the three lowest-cost generic alternatives for their prescribed drug. The pricing data is sourced from the National Catalog, which also sets maximum price limits for medicines. This move is part of a broader effort to make healthcare more affordable and transparent for citizens.

When receiving an electronic prescription, patients will also get details on the three most affordable drug alternatives. This new feature is delivered via a QR code on the prescription's paper slip. Scanning the code grants access to a list of all available medications with the same active ingredient, dosage, and form. Initially, the service covers single-component prescription drugs in tablet and capsule form that patients pay for out-of-pocket.

Future Expansion and Market Impact

Plans are in place to scale the system to other categories of medicines in the future. It is crucial to note that pharmacies are prohibited from selling the listed drugs above the established price limit. As Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated,

“This will help people choose medicine according to their budget and avoid overpaying for a brand. In the catalog, you will see all available drugs, as well as the three lowest-priced options. At least one of these options must be available in any pharmacy.”

Therefore, the innovation aims to make the process of selecting medication more convenient and transparent for Ukrainian patients.

The implementation of this new drug price information system could significantly alter the landscape of Ukraine's pharmaceutical market. It allows patients to save money and access quality medicines without overpaying. This initiative is also expected to foster greater competition among pharmacies, as they will be obligated to adhere to set prices and offer consumers affordable options. Enhanced price transparency in healthcare represents a vital step toward improving the quality of medical services in Ukraine.
