February 5th Prisoner Swap Sees 157 Ukrainians Freed, Including a Siberian Life Sentence Survivor
Russia and Ukraine Conduct Prisoner Exchange
According to Главком: A prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine on February 5th resulted in the release of 157 individuals. Among those freed was Mariupol defender Serhiy Mykhailenko, who had been illegally detained in Siberia following a politically motivated conviction. Mykhailenko joined the Azov unit in 2019 and sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs from an aerial bomb during the defense of Mariupol. On May 16, 2022, he was ordered into captivity and later survived the terrorist attack on the Olenivka prison.
He was subsequently held illegally in a Donetsk pre-trial detention center. In January 2024, on fabricated charges, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was held in a penal colony in Siberia and was one of 15 defenders sentenced to life who were freed in this exchange. Such exchanges are rare and complex diplomatic events in the ongoing war.
Stories of the Liberated
Another freed prisoner was 54-year-old defender from Volyn, Serhiy Hryniuk, who had been in captivity for three years and eight months. During that time, Serhiy Hryniuk welcomed four new grandchildren into his family. This marked the first such exchange in nearly five months.
'When I saw the video, I couldn't believe it was my Serhiy. He was simply unrecognizable. I heard he stutters now. I suspect it's a consequence of torture. I just cried all day: it felt like a part of my soul had died inside.' Tamara Koryahina, mother of Serhiy Mykhailenko
The prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia is a significant event within the context of the protracted conflict. The release of military personnel who endured brutal detention conditions highlights the war's humanitarian dimension and signifies efforts by both sides to find compromises. This exchange may signal the possibility of further negotiations and agreements aimed at freeing other captives. By foregrounding personal stories like that of Serhiy Mykhailenko, the news also draws attention to the war's profound impact on families and society as a whole.
