According to Главком: A Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv during the night of January 24, 2026, caused damage to structures within the National Sanctuary 'Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra,' a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The primary impact was on Building No. 66, located near the Far Caves, where several doors and window frames in a gallery were damaged. Cracks were also discovered in the walls of this building, and plaster fell off. Additionally, Building No. 67, known as the Church of the Conception of St. Anne, suffered damage where its plaster coating crumbled. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on Ukrainian cultural heritage since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Ancient Caves Unharmed, but Risks to Heritage Remain High

The Far and Varangian Caves, which are over a thousand years old and have been preserved since the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries, were not damaged. The sanctuary's General Director, Maksym Ostapenko, reported that specialists inspected the Varangian Caves and confirmed these underground galleries remained intact. However, he emphasized that massed artillery strikes pose severe risks to the Lavra's architectural value. The attack on Kyiv and the region involved various weapon types, including:

• 2 3M22 'Zircon' hypersonic missiles
• Approximately 2 9M727 cruise missiles
• Roughly 4 Kh-32 cruise missiles
• Attack unmanned aerial vehicles (drones)

Ostapenko stressed that a final assessment of the necessary restoration or repair work can only be made after a comprehensive survey by architects and engineers, as the building's structure suffered a serious dynamic shock. This incident is not the first instance of destruction on the Lavra's territory due to warfare; previous damage was recorded during World War II. The current situation raises profound concerns for the preservation of Ukraine's cultural heritage.
