Shelling in Sumy Region

According to Главком: Over the past day, Russian forces launched 38 attacks targeting 26 settlements in Ukraine's Sumy region. The assault involved guided aerial bombs, multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), artillery, mortars, and various types of drones. In the Krasnopil community, a 63-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man were wounded, and a private residential home was damaged.

In the Kyrykivka community, transport infrastructure, an administrative building, and technical equipment were also damaged. Police investigative teams and explosive ordnance disposal units worked at the sites. As noted by the National Police, law enforcement officers are documenting the aftermath of the shelling, recording destruction, and gathering evidence.

War's Impact on the Environment

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the State Environmental Inspectorate has recorded 10,885 cases of environmental damage, with an estimated cost of nearly 6.4 trillion hryvnias. These figures highlight the severe and ongoing consequences of the war for Ukraine's natural environment.

The attacks on Sumy underscore the continuation of active hostilities and their direct impact on civilians, which extends beyond human casualties to the destruction of critical infrastructure. Damage to homes and transport facilities points to the serious challenges communities will face long after the conflict ends. The environmental damage data further emphasizes the war's long-term negative effects on Ukraine's ecosystems, which could have profound implications for public health and the country's economic recovery for decades to come. The Sumy region, which borders Russia, has been a frequent target of cross-border attacks throughout the war.

As the situation in the Sumy region continues to escalate, the impact of the recent shelling is evident not only in civilian casualties but also in the destruction of vital infrastructure.
