Kyiv Universities Searched by Law Enforcement

According to Главком: On May 7, authorities in Kyiv conducted searches at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts and the Private Higher Education Institution Kyiv University of Culture. These actions were part of a criminal investigation into the misappropriation of budget funds. Security service personnel carried out the raids, preventing students and faculty from entering the university buildings.

According to available information, the searches extended beyond the campus premises to include nearby office spaces and the residences of officials. The leadership of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts is suspected of embezzling state funds on an especially large scale. It is worth noting that in March, law enforcement had already uncovered a financial fraud scheme at another arts-focused higher education institution.

Leadership Change and Public Response

Amid these developments, 76-year-old former rector Mykhailo Poplavsky was replaced by a new acting president, Ihor Komarnitskyi, a professor in the hotel, restaurant, and tourism business department. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine issued an official order for his appointment.

The situation at these universities has sparked concern within academic circles and drawn public attention to potential abuses in higher education.

The university raids highlight a stepped-up effort by law enforcement to combat financial misconduct in education, a crucial move toward restoring trust in Ukraine’s higher education system.

The change in leadership at Kyiv University of Culture also signals attempts to reform and improve conditions at the institution, now at the center of a major scandal.
