Cucumber Prices Skyrocket in Ukraine Amid Supply Shortage and Import Issues

Shortage of quality cucumbers and import problems
На фоні дефіциту та проблем з імпортом, ціни на огірки в Україні стрімко зростають.

Sharp Increase in Greenhouse Cucumber Prices

According to ХВИЛЯ: Greenhouse cucumber prices in Ukraine have surged dramatically due to a shortage of quality produce and reduced imports from Turkey. Current prices range from 120 to 150 Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH) per kilogram, equivalent to $2.81–$3.51 USD per kilogram. This represents an average weekly price increase of 10%. Ukraine's agricultural market is heavily influenced by seasonal domestic production and imports during the winter months.

The primary driver of this price hike is a lack of high-quality cucumbers on the domestic market. Most local greenhouse farms have ended their seasonal sales, significantly reducing supply. Compounding the issue, Turkey-Ukraine's main vegetable supplier during winter-provided only a limited quantity of produce this week, further straining the market.

Market and Consumer Impact

Recent data shows that greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine are now selling at an average price 61% higher than at the end of January 2025. Experts report that many wholesale companies are refusing to handle imported cucumbers due to their poor quality. This refusal exacerbates the market situation and limits the availability of good produce for consumers.

The rising price of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine highlights growing challenges to food security, as a shortage of quality products can drive up overall vegetable prices.

This trend is expected to continue unless imports resume or domestic production can meet market demand. Consumers should be prepared for potential further price fluctuations for vegetables in the coming weeks.
