Second Blackout in One Day Hits Occupied Zaporizhzhia Region
Power Outages Plague Russian-Held Areas of Ukraine
According to Главком: A large portion of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia region has experienced its second widespread power outage within 24 hours. The latest blackout again left significant parts of occupied Zaporizhzhia without electricity. Collaborator Yevgen Balitsky publicly acknowledged the severity of the issue but provided no specific cause for the failure or a timeline for restoration.
Similar disruptions have raised alarms in the Kherson region. On the same day, the occupied left bank of the Kherson region suffered a complete blackout, having already lost power earlier in the morning. While occupation authorities there report that electricity has been restored, Balitsky noted that
“energy workers are working to restore power as quickly as possible”
and assured that
“critical infrastructure is operating normally.”
These incidents are particularly concerning given that in July 2025, a massive blackout struck the same occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia. That outage left the following locations without power:
- Melitopol
- Enerhodar
- Vasylivskyi
- Yakymivskyi
- Chernihivskyi
- Prymorskyi
- Pryazovskyi
- Kuybyshevskyi
- Kamiansko-Dniprovskyi
Balitsky blamed the July blackout on a drone attack targeting high-voltage equipment. While officials claim the situation is under control, the pattern of failures demands close monitoring.
The recurring power outages in occupied territories point to serious infrastructure problems, likely stemming from ongoing military operations and strikes on critical facilities. These blackouts pose significant risks to civilians who rely on a stable electricity supply for daily life. As the situation evolves, international organizations must pay close attention, as the humanitarian conditions could deteriorate sharply.
The situation in the occupied regions remains tense, as recent events highlight the fragility of local infrastructure. For instance, the ongoing military actions have not only led to power outages but also intensified attacks in nearby areas. A recent incident in the Kherson region illustrates this escalation, where Russian forces targeted a village with multiple rocket launchers.
