Why the Usyk vs. Wilder Fight Fell Through

According to Главком: Serhiy Lapin, director for world champion boxer Oleksandr Usyk, has explained why negotiations for a fight with Deontay Wilder ultimately failed. The talks dragged on, leading Wilder to instead agree to a bout with Derek Chisora.

Lapin stated: 'We discussed the possibility of organizing a fight with Wilder and initially planned for it to take place in the USA. However, the negotiations lasted much longer than we anticipated, and Wilder agreed to fight Chisora. This happens in boxing-while talks are ongoing, other opportunities arise.'

Usyk's Announcement and Off-Ring Activity

Oleksandr Usyk, the WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO world heavyweight champion, has announced a fight with kickboxer Rick Verhoeven. In a separate event, he also participated in a friendly football match between the teams of Polissya and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Usyk took to the field in the second half wearing number 17 with the score at 2-0 for Polissya, playing for approximately 15 minutes. The match ended with a 2-0 victory for Polissya.

Recently, Oleksandr Usyk also vacated his WBO title, losing his status as the undisputed champion. The World Boxing Organization received an official request from Usyk's team regarding the WBO title. In its statement, the organization reported: 'After careful consideration, Usyk decided to relinquish his championship duties.' This move is a significant shift in the heavyweight landscape, consolidating his focus on specific challenges.

Commenting on his career, Oleksandr Usyk noted: 'I will continue boxing. I want to have a fight with Deontay Wilder. I am interested in this bout. He is a former world champion, a well-known and very powerful boxer. He has been one of the best in the heavyweight division over the last decade.'

The situation surrounding Oleksandr Usyk's career remains dynamic. The loss of the WBO title and the failed negotiations for a Wilder fight could impact his future plans, though he has expressed his intent to continue his professional boxing career. A potential showdown with Wilder remains a major point of interest for boxing fans, as both fighters possess immense power and elite accomplishments. Meanwhile, Usyk's participation in the friendly football match highlights his diverse interests and activity outside the ring.
