Alexandra Kononova's Achievements at the 2026 Paralympics

According to Главком: Ukrainian athlete Alexandra Kononova delivered the most successful performance for her national team at the 2026 Paralympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. She finished sixth overall in the ranking of multi-medalists, earning a total of five medals across two sports: para-biathlon and para cross-country skiing.

Kononova, a para-biathlete and cross-country skier, won one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. Her medal haul was achieved in the following events:

  • Gold in the sprint (para-biathlon) on March 7
  • Bronze in the individual race (para-biathlon) on March 8
  • Bronze in the sprint pursuit (para-biathlon) on March 13
  • Silver in the mixed relay (para cross-country skiing) on March 14
  • Bronze in the 20-kilometer individual race (para cross-country skiing) on March 15

Among competitors in para-biathlon and para cross-country skiing specifically, Kononova ranked fourth. The overall top multi-medalist at the 2026 Paralympics was Austrian para-alpine skier Veronika Aigner. American athlete Oksana Masters placed second, while South Korea's Yunji Kim took third.

Incident Involving National Symbols

It is notable that during the 2026 Paralympics, the family of a Ukrainian athlete was compelled to remove national symbols.

Valeriy Sushkevych reported: 'The family of the Ukrainian champion came from Ternopil, bought tickets, entered the stadium with a Ukrainian flag and wearing Ukrainian clothing. They were stopped, their flag was taken away, and the champion's mother's scarf with a Ukrainian ornament was confiscated. Only after being stripped of these items were they allowed onto the stadium grounds.'

Kononova's accomplishments underscore the significance of sport for Ukraine, particularly as the nation faces ongoing international challenges. Her performance not only elevates the prestige of Ukrainian athletics but also serves as an inspiration to many. The incident involving the prohibition of national symbols raises questions about the treatment of Ukrainian representatives at international forums, highlighting the importance of supporting national identity in sport.

Thus, Alexandra Kononova has emerged as a prominent ambassador for Ukrainian sport on the global stage, demonstrating high-level results and gaining recognition for her achievements.
