Renovating Olena Riabko’s Ancestral Home

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Amid the ongoing challenges in Ukraine, Olena Riabko has embarked on renovating her family’s old house, inspired by practical solutions she discovered while living in rental properties. The war has forced many to seek temporary housing, prompting Olena to rethink how to create comfort and functionality in her own space. She shared her top six home improvement ideas on Facebook, aimed at enhancing coziness and practicality.

Six Practical Enhancements for a Comfortable Home

  • One of Olena’s key upgrades involves replacing a single central ceiling light with side lighting. This design choice mimics the natural glow of sunrise and sunset, creating a more soothing and inviting atmosphere indoors.

“It’s much nicer to look at the sun when it’s setting rather than when it’s overhead,” she explained.
  • She also emphasizes a spacious bathroom countertop, which offers ample room for toiletries, decor, and practical use-unlike the typical small sinks with hardly any surface area.

“Not those tiny sinks without space, but a full countertop where you can soak kids’ clothes, organize items, and display small jars or decorations,” Olena noted.
  • Adding a fireplace or stove is another important feature on her list. This would provide a backup heat source in case the main heating system fails-a crucial consideration during uncertain times.

“It’s about having an alternative way to stay warm if something happens to the primary heating,” Olena said.
  • The positioning of the bathroom window is carefully planned to avoid water splashes while allowing natural light and ventilation, enhancing the sense of space and freshness.

“Natural light in the bathroom changes the entire feel of the space. I want the window placed so it’s not right next to the shower, bathtub, or sink,” she explained.
  • Olena stresses the importance of a well-thought-out backup power system, tailored to the needs of household devices and integrated seamlessly into the home.

“Given what we’ve been through in Ukraine, the reasons for backup power are obvious,” she remarked.
  • Lastly, she envisions a simple backyard retreat without a formal terrace-just a quiet spot to enjoy a cup of coffee, fresh air, or a peaceful meal without elaborate structures.

“I want a cozy little outdoor corner, no complicated constructions or fancy coverings, just a place to relax,” Olena shared.

Through these thoughtful changes, Olena Riabko aims to make her home not only more comfortable but also reflective of lessons learned from living in temporary rentals during difficult times.

Her renovation approach highlights how Ukrainian families adapt their living environments amid wartime instability, focusing on safety, comfort, and practicality. These insights could inspire others facing similar challenges to rethink and improve their own homes.
