Thousands Flee Oleshky Amid Dire Shortages of Food, Water, and Medicine; Urgent Call for Humanitarian Corridor
Humanitarian Crisis Worsens in Oleshky
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Residents of the temporarily occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region are abandoning their homes due to a severe lack of food, clean water, and medicines. Many face deadly risks from landmines as they attempt to secure even the most basic essentials for survival. Dmitry Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament’s Human Rights Commissioner, has urged international partners to establish a secure humanitarian corridor to evacuate civilians safely.
“People must be rescued while there are still people to save,” said Dmitry Lubinets.
Regional Overview of the Crisis
Oleshky, along with nearby settlements such as Hola Prystan, Stara Zburivka, and Nova Zburivka, is experiencing an escalating humanitarian emergency. The city is cut off from food supplies, clean drinking water, medical aid, electricity, and healthcare services. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiga, confirmed these conditions and called on international organizations to intervene, emphasizing that
“civilians, including children, remain without sufficient food, medicine, clean water, electricity, and medical support.”
In response, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations appealed to Pope Leo XIV for assistance in delivering humanitarian aid and facilitating evacuations. Lubinets highlighted the grave dangers faced by residents, stating they are aware of the threat posed by mines along escape routes but note that staying behind also risks their lives, as those in occupied Oleshky are deprived of life’s essentials.
The European Union has echoed calls for humanitarian access and secure evacuation pathways for civilians. However, Russia has so far not agreed to organize a humanitarian mission to evacuate residents from the area. Ukraine has pushed for an urgent OSCE review of the humanitarian disaster unfolding in occupied Oleshky, seeking to draw global attention to the crisis.
The unfolding emergency in Oleshky and its neighboring communities paints a stark picture of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation that demands immediate action. The absence of critical resources endangers the lives of local residents, especially children. Appeals to the international community underscore the pressing need for prompt intervention as many civilians remain trapped in hazardous conditions without access to vital means of survival.
The urgent need for safe evacuation routes is underscored by recent reports of civilians returning from occupied regions. As humanitarian conditions deteriorate in Oleshky, the situation parallels the experiences of those who have managed to escape through checkpoints like Mokrany–Domanove. These individuals, including vulnerable groups such as children and teenagers, highlight the critical importance of establishing secure pathways for evacuation.
