New AI Model Family GPT-5.6 Announced

According to Главком: OpenAI has introduced the GPT-5.6 family of artificial intelligence models, which includes three distinct versions: Sol, Luna, and Terra. Alongside this launch, the company also revealed ChatGPT Work, a new tool designed to automatically generate documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other workplace materials. The release of this next-generation model lineup was initially delayed at the request of the U.S. government due to safety concerns. It went ahead following consultations between OpenAI and the administration of President Donald Trump.

Model Specifications and the New Tool

The GPT-5.6 family comprises three models, each with its own strengths. The most powerful, Sol, sets a new benchmark for both intelligence and efficiency, achieving state-of-the-art results in coding, knowledge handling, cybersecurity, and scientific tasks. According to Sam Altman:

“Sol demonstrates 54% higher token efficiency in agentic programming tasks.” - Sam Altman

Luna is built for maximum speed, while Terra strikes a balance between performance and efficiency.

The new ChatGPT Work tool can interact with connected files and applications and is available through the web version, as well as desktop and mobile apps. Initially, it will roll out on macOS and Windows for users across all subscription plans. Sam Altman noted that the company incorporated numerous changes based on discussions with U.S. officials, highlighting the impressive technical capabilities of the U.S. government and OpenAI’s commitment to product quality and safety.

An Ultra mode for the Sol model unlocks additional computing resources and allows certain processes to be delegated to sub-models. This opens up new possibilities for more efficient data handling and tackling complex tasks. With this release, OpenAI continues to advance its technology while addressing market challenges and safety requirements.

The launch of OpenAI’s new AI models underscores the growing role of AI technologies in business and everyday life. The GPT-5.6 family, particularly the Sol model, has the potential to significantly reshape how work processes are automated, ultimately impacting corporate competitiveness. The safety-related delays and consultations with the U.S. government highlight the importance of ethics and responsibility in AI development-a pressing topic in today’s tech landscape.

As OpenAI continues to innovate with its latest models, the competitive landscape of AI development is heating up. In a parallel move, SpaceXAI has recently launched Grok 4.5, further intensifying the rivalry with OpenAI and Anthropic. This growing competition underscores the rapid advancements in AI technology and the ongoing efforts of leading companies to push the boundaries of what is possible.
