Charity Foundation 'TVOYA OPORA' Launches a Nationwide Survey

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The charity organization 'TVOYA OPORA' has initiated a comprehensive survey aimed at understanding emotional exhaustion among foster and caregiving parents across Ukraine. This initiative seeks to bolster foster families, helping prevent parental burnout and ensuring children remain in stable family environments. Open until October 31, 2026, the questionnaire covers 24 regions of Ukraine, with each parent asked to complete the survey individually.

The Critical Need for This Research

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, data from 2025 reveals that 454 families ceased operating in Ukraine, including 410 foster families and 44 family-type orphanages.

Valeriya Tatarchuk emphasized, 'While causes vary, the scope of this problem underlines the necessity for continuous support for families at every stage.'

She further added, 'For the caregiving reform to succeed, we must care not only for the children but also for those raising them. A worn-out adult cannot provide a stable foundation for a traumatized child.'

The project is supported by ISAR 'Ednannya,' the 'Askold and Dir' Foundation, and the governments of Norway and Sweden. Key partners include:

  • The Coordination Center for the Development of Family-Based Childcare
  • The Research Group of the State Tax University
  • Kyiv Regional Center for Social Services
  • The Regional State Administrations of Khmelnytskyi and Zhytomyr

Throughout the year, eight free two-day retreats will be organized for foster and caregiving parents, with travel costs also covered.

Valeriya Tatarchuk noted, 'These retreats offer parents a chance to reconnect as a couple, to breathe and step away from daily pressures, not just fulfilling parental duties.'

The research aims to identify the main stressors affecting foster parents, discover what sustains them, and determine what support they lack. Complementing this effort, the project produces a podcast titled 'I Want to Be Held,' featuring family stories, expert psychological advice, and interviews with various guests.

Foster parents often face relentless demands, juggling multiple adult roles and enduring emotional strain due to constant exposure to children's trauma and challenging behaviors. This initiative by 'TVOYA OPORA' goes beyond research, actively providing crucial assistance to those raising children under difficult circumstances. Supporting foster caregivers is essential for the stability and well-being of these families, directly benefiting the children who depend on them.

As the challenges faced by families with children in difficult circumstances continue to grow, various sectors are coming together to provide support. For instance, Ukrainian cafes and restaurants are actively participating in initiatives aimed at assisting families of seriously ill children, showcasing the community's commitment to fostering resilience and stability in these vulnerable environments.
