Solar Power Installation at Chornomor-6 HOA in Odesa

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In Odesa, the homeowners association of the Chornomor-6 apartment complex has implemented a solar power system costing approximately 3.2 million UAH. This installation supplies electricity to the building’s eight elevators, lighting, and security systems across the nine-story, eight-entrance residential block. The majority of the project's funding came from national and municipal support programs.

Residents recall previous blackouts that left them without power for more than five days, causing significant disruptions to water supply and heating. To address these challenges, the co-owners decided at the start of 2026 to install a solar energy system aimed at making the building's electricity supply more self-sufficient.

  • The total cost for equipment and installation was around 3.2 million UAH.
  • Approximately 2.2 million UAH was secured through the “GreenDIM” program by the Energy Efficiency Fund, while the Odesa city budget covered about 800,000 UAH.
  • Initially, residents contributed around 3,500 UAH per apartment, most of which was reimbursed by the city.
  • As part of the project, four elevators were upgraded to operate with the new system, with each modernization costing about 150,000 UAH.

All eight elevators, lighting, surveillance cameras, intercoms, and security rooms are connected to the solar station. The security office can function as a resilience hub during outages, allowing residents to recharge devices. Even when the city grid is operational, the building reduces its electricity consumption by using its own solar-generated power.

"Upgrading one elevator cost around 150,000 UAH,"

Alla Bondar, Chornomor-6 HOA Representative

Alla Bondar highlighted the importance of technical assessment before installing solar systems: “The key step before setting up a solar plant is to evaluate the building's technical capabilities and determine which equipment needs to operate independently. Simply installing solar panels doesn’t guarantee elevators, pumps, or other systems will function during blackouts.”

Project Benefits

The Chornomor-6 solar installation marks a significant move toward energy independence and improves residents’ living conditions amid ongoing energy crises.

This initiative reflects a growing movement in Ukraine toward adopting renewable energy solutions, particularly in response to frequent power outages. Thanks to co-funding from government and local programs, such projects are becoming more accessible to multi-apartment buildings, enhancing energy security and comfort. The success of this project sets a valuable precedent for other homeowners associations seeking reliable electricity amidst challenging energy circumstances.
