Whistles for Vance at the 2026 Olympics: How Trump Reacted and Who Carried the Ukrainian Flag
The Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics
According to Главком: The opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in Italy, attracted the attention of not only sports fans but also political figures. One of the main topics was the booing of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who is leading the U.S. delegation at the games. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction when Vance was shown on the stadium screens during the parade of American athletes. A similar reaction was previously demonstrated towards the delegation of Israeli athletes.
U.S. President Donald Trump, commenting on this incident, noted:
“It’s strange because people like him. Well, I mean, he’s honestly in a foreign country. He’s not being booed in this country.”
It is worth noting that Trump was not present at the ceremony.
The U.S. Delegation and Ukraine's Participation
The U.S. delegation, besides J.D. Vance, consists of his wife Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Tilman Fertitta. The opening ceremony took place in several locations, including Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Ukrainian delegation drew particular attention. The Ukrainian flag at the San Siro Stadium in Milan was carried by 21-year-old short track representative Yelizaveta Sydorko. She expressed her emotions, saying:
“I didn't think I would be entrusted to carry the flag. There are many more well-known athletes in Ukraine, but I am sure my dad is proud of me - both for being here and for representing the country.”
Yelizaveta's father serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Ukrainian flag was carried by Vladyslav Geraskevych, the first Ukrainian skeleton athlete in history. These events became an important part of the ceremony, highlighting Ukraine's participation in the international sports forum.
The opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics was not only a sports event but also a political one, where public sentiments, particularly towards U.S. representatives, found their reflection. The images of Vice President Vance being booed reflect the emotional backdrop accompanying international events amid modern political challenges. At the same time, the presentation of Ukrainian athletes on such an important stage, particularly through the symbolic act of carrying the flag, emphasizes their participation in the global sports context, which is significant during times when Ukraine is going through difficult times.
