Port Hawkesbury Paper Turns to Wind Power

According to НВ — Техно: Port Hawkesbury Paper, a major player in the paper industry, has unveiled plans to meet over 60% of its annual electricity demand through wind energy. The project involves installing up to 31 turbines, each with a capacity of 6.9 megawatts (MW), at the Goose Harbor Lake wind farm. A supply agreement has been signed with Germany's Nordex SE, which will provide the N163/6.X turbine model.

Why This Project Matters

The decision to move forward came after an extreme cold snap in January, when temperatures plunged below minus 30 degrees Celsius. During that event, wind power generation in the province dropped from 350 MW in the morning to just 75 MW by evening.

Jay Woodworth, Director of Development at Port Hawkesbury Paper, commented: 'On projects of this scale, we simply cannot afford mistakes. During peak periods, our mill alone consumes up to 25% of Nova Scotia's entire grid capacity. That’s why having our own generation is a matter of business survival.'

The turbines installed at Goose Harbor Lake will feature rotor diameters of 163 meters-roughly the length of one and a half football fields-and steel towers reaching 118 meters, comparable to a 40-story skyscraper. Thanks to their enormous blade span, each turbine can capture a vast area of airflow, harvesting even light gusts and instantly converting them into megawatts, significantly boosting the mill's energy efficiency.

This initiative highlights the growing shift toward renewable energy in the face of global warming and the need to cut carbon emissions. Port Hawkesbury Paper aims not only to secure its energy independence but also to reduce its environmental footprint-a pressing concern for many industrial operations. The adoption of cutting-edge energy technologies is expected to drive regional development and could serve as a model for other companies looking to adapt to the evolving energy landscape.

As industries increasingly look for sustainable energy solutions, the integration of hybrid power systems is gaining traction.
