PACE Rejects Legitimacy of Russia's Newly Elected State Duma

According to Корреспондент — Світ: The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has declared that Russia's recently formed State Duma cannot be considered a democratically elected body. This stance follows scrutiny of the elections held in Ukrainian territories currently under Russian occupation.

The Assembly further called on the global community to disregard any political or legal consequences arising from these elections. This position highlights significant concerns regarding the fairness and legality of conducting polls under conditions of military occupation.

Upholding Democratic Norms and International Law

PACE’s resolution underscores the critical need to respect democratic standards and international legal frameworks, especially in safeguarding Ukraine's territorial integrity. By refusing to acknowledge election results from occupied regions, the Assembly's decision may influence future diplomatic relations and international responses toward Russia, including sanctions and political engagement.

For observers outside Europe, this development signals the ongoing international resistance to actions perceived as undermining sovereignty and democratic legitimacy amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Assembly’s firm position reinforces the broader commitment to democratic principles in global governance.
