According to Главком: On July 7, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, following the New Julian calendar, observes the feast day of Saints Job and Theodosius of Manyava. These two monks founded the Manyava Skete, a monastery often referred to as the Ukrainian Athos due to its spiritual significance. This date holds deep meaning for believers, as the lives of these saints are closely tied to the growth of monasticism in Ukraine.

Saint Job, born Ivan in Tysmenytsia in the Carpathian region, studied at a monastery school in Univ and later at the Ostroh Academy. He took monastic vows on Mount Athos under the name Ezekiel. After the Union of Brest was signed in 1598, he returned to the Carpathian area. Job revived monastic communities in places like Univ, Derman, and Uhorytsia, eventually settling near Krasnopil under the Carpathian Mountains in 1606.

Theodosius, Job's nephew, became the first abbot of the Manyava Skete. This monastery gained widespread fame for its spiritual traditions and strong influence on Orthodox life in the region. Alongside Saints Job and Theodosius, July 7 also honors the martyrs Peregrinus, Lucian, and the hieromartyr Evangelus, Bishop of Tomis.

Folk Traditions and Beliefs

In folk tradition, July 7 is known as Khomyn Day, with the oak tree serving as its symbol. Common weather signs include: heavy morning dew points to clear skies and a bountiful harvest; unusually strong grass fragrance suggests rain is coming; and spiders weaving webs early in the morning indicate a hot day. On the other hand, rain on this date may predict a damp July and poor crop yields.

Certain prohibitions are also observed on this day. People are advised against:

• lending money;
• doing laundry;
• refusing help to those in need;
• wearing jewelry.

These customs highlight the deep connection between spirituality and everyday life in Ukrainian culture.
