Pension Supplement for Mothers of Large Families in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Starting in 2026, a new monthly pension supplement will be available in Ukraine to recognize citizens for special service to the state. This initiative specifically targets mothers who have raised five or more children. The bonus amount will be calculated as a percentage of the official subsistence minimum, ranging from 35% to 40%.

Eligibility extends to women who have given birth to or adopted five or more children and raised each child until at least the age of six. In the absence of the mother, the father may apply for the benefit. The precise percentage is determined by the number of children raised:

  • For five children: 35% of the subsistence minimum;
  • For six children: 36%;
  • For seven children: 37%;
  • For eight children: 38%;
  • For nine children: 39%;
  • The maximum supplement of 40% is reserved for those who have raised ten or more children.

Based on current projections, this will translate to an additional sum of approximately 908 to 1,038 Ukrainian hryvnias per month in 2026. This policy is part of broader efforts to support families amidst ongoing economic challenges.

The supplement will be paid on top of an individual's existing old-age, disability, or other state pension. Applications will be processed from the date of submission, requiring supporting documentation. If a recipient passes away, a portion of the payment may transfer to their dependents: one dependent would receive 70% of the sum, while two or more would share 90%. The bonus amount will be automatically adjusted annually in line with increases to the subsistence minimum.

Early Retirement for Parents of Large Families

Mothers of large families also qualify for early retirement at age 50, provided they have a minimum of 15 years of insurance contributions. Fathers are eligible for early retirement at 55 with at least 20 years of contributions. Ukraine's pension system also includes automatic, hidden bonuses for work beyond the standard required period, applied during the initial calculation or a scheduled pension review.

The introduction of this supplement aims to improve social protections for this demographic, acknowledging the significant costs of raising multiple children. Coupled with the early retirement option, these measures are intended to serve as an incentive for larger families, potentially helping to address the nation's demographic trends by supporting parents and improving conditions for families with children.
