New Contract Targets Chip Cooling

According to НВ — Техно: DARPA has awarded Northrop Grumman a $7 million deal to keep building diamond-coated chips under the second phase of its THREADS program. The technology, which is being developed with Stanford University, focuses on keeping military electronics from overheating so that systems can stay effective and dependable in demanding situations.

The opening phase of the project managed to raise the power density of gallium nitride semiconductors by a factor of 3.3. The next step is to triple that number. Better thermal management would let radio-frequency transmitters used in radar, satellite links, and communications gear deliver higher power without taking up any extra space.

Why Diamonds Matter for Chips

Synthetic diamonds carry heat away roughly five times more efficiently than copper. Northrop Grumman intends to put diamond layers into high-power semiconductor components, which could mark a major shift in cooling approaches. Researchers have been working since 2019 on growing diamond material in tiny channels on the underside of chips.

The company reported the contract win and the project's continuation on August 30 at 10:09 p.m. This milestone matters because breakthroughs in this area could reshape military electronics, improving how well systems perform and hold up under stress.

This kind of diamond cooling could eventually help everyday devices too, since overheating remains a major obstacle for many electronics.
