Language Identity in Ukraine

According to Главком: Viacheslav Diudenko, a Ukrainian barber who communicated in Russian for over six decades, has actively switched to Ukrainian in the last four years. He notes that transitioning to his native language is challenging, stating that 'erasing and refreshing language instincts with a single click is unrealistic.' He emphasizes that he has been writing exclusively in Ukrainian for four years and speaks it with everyone around him. However, he recently received a remark that Ukrainian 'does not suit him.' Diudenko calmly responded, 'I have no choice.'

Military Perspective on the Language Issue

Oleksandr Zarubei, an actor and soldier, also shared his views on the language issue at the front. He claims that Russian serves as a weapon on the battlefield. Zarubei cited an incident where occupiers were captured after mistaking Ukrainian troops for their own soldiers. This case underscores the importance of language identity in the context of war and relations between Ukrainian and Russian military personnel.

Diudenko and Zarubei together illustrate how language identity can shape life and perception in society, while also highlighting the significance of Ukrainian in today's context.

“I want to be a full-fledged part of my country's future, and I will persistently strive so that my native language, for me as a Ukrainian, will indeed suit me.” - Viacheslav Diudenko.

Through their stories, these individuals emphasize the role of language in daily life and on the battlefield.

These narratives reflect not only personal experiences of linguistic adaptation during wartime but also a broader trend toward reclaiming Ukrainian identity. Amid the ongoing conflict, where language becomes a symbol of national unity and resistance, the importance of switching to Ukrainian is highlighted both in everyday life and at the front. This process may become a key factor in shaping a new cultural and linguistic consciousness in Ukraine.
