Firefighter Dies in Yahotyn Collapse During Rescue Efforts

According to ДСНС: A Ukrainian State Emergency Service (SESU) firefighter was killed today during rescue operations in Yahotyn. The tragedy occurred when structures collapsed as crews were responding to the aftermath of a Russian artillery strike and battling a major fire at warehouse buildings.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Mykhailo Protsenko, a Chief Master Sergeant and firefighter-rescuer of the 22nd State Fire and Rescue Unit of the Kyiv Region's SESU Main Directorate. Mykhailo is survived by his wife and two young sons. Another rescuer, 49-year-old Serhii Khobotnia, a Master Sergeant and squad commander of the same unit, was injured in the incident and is currently under medical supervision.

This incident highlights the extreme dangers faced by first responders in Ukraine, who routinely operate under fire to save lives and property. The ongoing full-scale invasion has dramatically increased the risks of their already perilous duties.

Honoring the Heroism of Rescuers

Andrii Danyk, a representative of the SESU, stated:

“Following another massive Russian attack on our country, we have once again suffered painful losses among the SESU personnel.”

He also wished Serhii a 'speedy recovery' and stressed the importance of remembering the rescuers' heroism, declaring:

“We will never forget the feat of our Heroes.”

Mourning the loss, Andrii Danyk added: “Eternal memory to the fallen rescuer!”

This tragedy underscores the grave risks emergency personnel confront while performing their duties in a conflict zone. Working under constant shelling and in hazardous conditions demands not only professionalism but immense courage. The loss of Mykhailo Protsenko is a painful reminder of the price heroes pay to save the lives of others and the critical importance of supporting their families during this difficult time.
