Researchers have established that significant amounts of natural hydrogen may be buried deep below Australia's surface. This hydrogen forms when magnetite comes into contact with superheated water inside banded iron formations. After identifying enormous magnetite deposits under one region of the continent, a team from an Australian university has developed a method to speed up hydrogen production by pumping a chemical solution into fractures in the rock.
The Scale of the Hydrogen Find
Based on current calculations, the hydrogen reserves beneath Australia could power the country for several generations. Australia may also emerge as the planet's leading exporter of carbon-friendly fuel. In a 60-day trial carried out at 200 degrees Celsius, researchers confirmed that hydrogen can be generated continuously from magnetite. Because the laboratory conditions mirrored the deep-Earth environment, the team's conclusions carry added weight.
Kaveh Mohanirahimi, the study's author, said: "Western Australia has the world's largest iron formations. If we manage to unlock this reserve on a commercial scale, it will completely change our energy future."
Associate Professor Alireza Keshavarz similarly highlighted the potential: "Australia could be sitting on a giant, unexplored energy reserve, and the scale of that potential is simply staggering."
As nations search for cleaner energy options, natural hydrogen is gaining increasing attention. This discovery could significantly alter Australia's energy outlook and present fresh opportunities in the green-power sector. With worldwide momentum shifting toward renewables, Australia has a chance to take a central role in the global hydrogen economy, which could lead to lower carbon emissions and the broader adoption of sustainable technologies at home and abroad.
