Who Do You Trust? Teenager Trapped on Rock Face After Following Artificial Intelligence Advice

According to НВ — Техно: On October 3rd, a 16-year-old boy was rescued from Crown Mountain near Vancouver after becoming stranded on a rock face. The teenager had used artificial intelligence to plan his climbing route, but the AI suggested a hazardous path. It directed him through a ravine filled with water and melting snow, leaving him stuck on a steep area near the base of a cliff known as the 'Widowmaker.'

Crown Mountain is located about a 40-minute drive north of Vancouver. Volunteers from the North Shore Rescue team received a call reporting the trapped teen. The rescue operation lasted roughly three hours after the alert, during which rescuers maintained phone contact with the boy and eventually lowered down from a helicopter to bring him to safety. Rescuer Paul Markie recalled:

The boy was extremely frightened. He genuinely feared for his life. - Paul Markie

Risks of Relying on Artificial Intelligence

This is not an isolated incident. Earlier this summer, three hikers were rescued on Mount Shasta in California after planning their trek using Google's Gemini AI service. That AI recommended carrying less food and water than necessary for an eight-hour hike, resulting in a multi-day ordeal. Paul Markie warns:

Exercise caution when following routes and advice generated by artificial intelligence. You can’t blindly trust AI recommendations. It’s essential to question the information and assess whether it actually makes sense. - Paul Markie

Adding to concerns about AI misuse, a 30-year-old woman was arrested in Florida last month for sending threats through the chatbot Claude. The earliest threats were recorded on September 26, followed by additional messages on September 27. This case highlights some of the broader dangers linked to AI’s growing role across different areas of life.

These incidents related to AI-assisted planning for outdoor activities underscore the importance of critical thinking and caution when using technology. Imperfect algorithms can lead to risky situations, especially where safety is paramount. This event serves as a reminder that users should carefully evaluate AI-generated information and avoid relying on it without question.
