The Courage of Oleksandr Zybrov

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr Zybrov, leader of the 299th Tactical Aviation Brigade's squadron, was posthumously honored with the title Hero of Ukraine and the Gold Star Order for his extraordinary heroism on February 24, 2022. On the very first day of Russia's full-scale invasion, Zybrov took to the skies piloting a Su-25 attack aircraft and successfully destroyed enemy vehicles in a Russian convoy. His plane was hit during the engagement, and with no chance to eject or return to base, Zybrov deliberately directed his burning aircraft into the invading forces, sacrificing his life to halt their advance. This supreme act of valor was officially recognized by the President of Ukraine under decree No. 1048/2026.

Legacy and Remembrance

Beyond his combat role, Oleksandr Zybrov was a mentor shaping the next generation of Ukrainian pilots, including Rostyslav Lazarenko, Danylo Murashko, Vadym Blahovisny, and Yehor Serediuk. His heartfelt promise,

“I will protect you and all Ukrainians,”

reflects his deep commitment to his country. Zybrov inspired his trainees with the conviction that

“Our future lies with this young generation.”

In 2022, other Ukrainian aviators also paid the ultimate price while carrying out combat missions. Notably, Marat Mambetov, flight commander of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, was posthumously awarded Hero of Ukraine after his death on October 1, 2022. Additionally, Colonel Oleksandr Dovhach, commander of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade, received the same honor following his death in March 2022 during an operation in eastern Ukraine.

The bravery demonstrated by Oleksandr Zybrov and his fellow pilots stands as a powerful symbol of Ukraine’s resilience and determination in defending its sovereignty and freedom.

Recognizing the sacrifices of Zybrov and other heroes highlights the crucial role of military service and selflessness amid modern warfare. Their actions not only shape the nation’s identity but also serve as enduring examples for future generations who learn from their dedication and courage. Honoring these soldiers is vital to preserving the history and cultural spirit of a nation steadfast in its fight for independence.

As the legacy of heroism continues to unfold, the sacrifice of Lieutenant Colonel Zybrov resonates alongside that of other brave Ukrainian aviators. For instance, Colonel Andriy Pryimachenko was also posthumously honored as a Hero of Ukraine after his valorous actions near Vuhledar. These remarkable stories collectively highlight the unwavering courage and commitment of those who defend Ukraine's sovereignty.
