Severe Weather Strikes Ukraine on April 26, 2026

According to Главком: On April 26, 2026, a powerful storm system swept through Dnipro and other parts of Ukraine, bringing a dust storm, fierce winds, widespread blackouts, casualties, and structural damage. In the city of Dnipro, the dust storm was accompanied by violent gusts that tore roofs off buildings.

According to Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, more than 160,000 subscribers across the region have been left without electricity due to the weather. Over 80 repair crews are working to restore the power grid.

“Energy workers are doing everything possible to bring electricity back to people as quickly as possible. Work is ongoing around the clock. Municipal services are also operating simultaneously. The squall has knocked down trees and damaged cars in communities. The bad weather is continuing. I urge residents to be cautious. Do not approach downed power lines and follow safety rules,”

Hanzha said.

The storm claimed the life of a man in Zaporizhzhia, while in Kharkiv, a section of a roof was torn off a multi-story building. Across Ukraine, two people died and two others were injured as a result of the severe weather. Rescue teams are working to clear the aftermath in 13 regions.

Weather in Kyiv and Its Consequences

On Sunday, April 26, residents of Kyiv’s right-bank districts witnessed intense storms, including thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and hail. Meteorologists had earlier warned that most regions of Ukraine would see deteriorating weather conditions, with strong storm winds from the northwest expected to reach 15–20 m/s. Videos of the storm posted on social media highlight the scale of the disaster.

The severe weather that affected a large part of Ukraine posed a serious challenge for local emergency services and residents. Restoring power and clearing the damage caused by the storm will require significant effort from multiple agencies and considerable time, as the elements inflicted extensive destruction. This situation underscores the growing importance of preparing for extreme weather events, which have become increasingly frequent in recent years.

The impact of the severe weather in Ukraine has been devastating, with reports of fatalities and significant damage across various regions. In particular, the strong winds have caused serious destruction, such as the roof collapse of a building in Kharkiv, resulting in tragic loss of life. As the storm continues to affect the country, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about the ongoing situation and safety measures being implemented.
