North Korea launched a ballistic missile amid preparations for joint exercises between Seoul and Washington
North Korea Launch: Chronicle and Reaction
According to 5 канал: Pyongyang has carried out yet another launch of a short-range ballistic missile - this time towards the Sea of Japan, referred to as the East Sea in South Korea. The launch occurred around 17:00 from the Wonsan area on the eastern coast of the country. It took place on the eve of the joint military maneuvers between the US and South Korea. Specialists from both countries are currently analyzing the data to clarify the missile's characteristics and range.
In response to these actions, the National Security Office under the South Korean president convened an emergency meeting. Representatives from the Ministry of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff attended. Seoul described the launch as yet another provocation that violates UN Security Council resolutions, and demanded an immediate halt to such tests. South Korean military forces have been put on full alert and continue to monitor possible new launches.
"Our armed forces are in a state of full combat readiness, enhancing monitoring and surveillance for potential additional launches, and closely exchanging relevant information with the US and Japan."
This latest launch became the tenth ballistic launch by North Korea in 2026. The previous test took place over 40 days ago - on June 25. At the same time, according to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia has begun the deployment of a missile unit on its territory, staffed by personnel from North Korea. The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense believes this could considerably enhance the Russian army's capabilities to carry out ballistic strikes on Ukrainian territory.
For the Russian audience, this storyline is significant not only as a regional news: the rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang directly affects the situation surrounding Ukraine. Therefore, the joint exercises of Seoul and Washington and the subsequent launches by North Korea are also viewed from the perspective of European security.
Escalation of Tensions in the Region
The latest launch by North Korea confirms that tensions around the Korean Peninsula remain high, especially in the lead-up to the joint exercises of South Korea and the US. The response from Seoul, which has declared full combat readiness, underscores the seriousness of the situation. Against this backdrop, coordination between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo in the area of security has become even more relevant - both to deter North Korean threats and in light of the potential increase in Russia's military presence in the region.
In light of these escalating tensions, it's important to note that Kim Jong Un has directed an increase in North Korea's nuclear capabilities, which could further complicate the security landscape in the region. This development underscores the heightened stakes as military exercises between the US and South Korea proceed amidst North Korea's provocative actions.
