Widespread Tax Notifications Sent to Businesses

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian sole proprietors (FOPs) have begun receiving mass electronic notifications from the State Tax Service regarding alleged tax debts. This wave of automated messages has caused significant concern among entrepreneurs. It is crucial to understand that the amount stated in these notices may not reflect your actual, up-to-date balance. To verify your true financial standing, you must log into your personal taxpayer's electronic account.

How to Check Your Actual Financial Status

Within the 'Budget Settlement Status' section of your e-cabinet, you can find a complete history of all transactions, charges, and information on any overpayment or genuine debt. Sole proprietors in Ukraine face personal liability for their business debts. According to Article 52 of the Ukrainian Civil Code, a sole proprietor is liable for obligations with all of their personal property. This means enforcement actions can be taken against:

  • Business bank accounts
  • Equipment
  • Personal savings
  • Automobiles
  • Real estate

However, it is important to note that enforcement authorities cannot seize a debtor's only home if it is their primary residence and its size does not exceed established social norms. Last year, the Tax Service launched an automated debt collection system, which has already recovered over 100 million hryvnias in debts from legal entities.

"They are sending letters electronically, as a mass mailing. They inform about the existence of a tax debt. This kind of notification is fine. These letters are not always current, but if you receive one, log into your taxpayer's account and check," noted expert Mykhailo Smokovych.

Given the increasing pressure from tax authorities, entrepreneurs must diligently monitor their financial obligations and utilize available tools to track their accounts. The situation with mass debt notifications underscores the critical need for transparency and accurate information for business owners. As tax agencies actively implement automated collection systems, sole proprietors should be especially vigilant about their financial commitments. Regularly using the electronic taxpayer's cabinet helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures control over your financial status, which is vital for preventing severe consequences like property seizure.
