Unsettled Week Ahead: Icy Roads and Mixed Precipitation Forecast

According to Главком: Ukraine, including Kyiv, is set for a week of unstable weather starting February 12. According to the State Emergency Service citing Ukrhydrometcentre, light rain is expected in some western and northern regions, with wet snow possible overnight. The Carpathian Mountains will also see moderate precipitation at night, while the rest of the country is forecast to remain dry.

Icy conditions are anticipated on roads across most regions, except in the south. Winds will be predominantly southerly at 7-12 m/s (16-27 mph), with gusts reaching 15-20 m/s (34-45 mph) in the Carpathian highlands during the day. Nighttime temperatures will range from +3°C to -2°C, dropping to -1°C to -6°C in the Left Bank regions. Daytime highs across Ukraine will be between 0°C and +5°C, reaching +3°C to +8°C in Transcarpathia and the south, and up to +12°C in Crimea. Eastern regions will be colder, with nighttime lows of -8°C to -13°C and daytime temperatures around 0°C.

Kyiv Weather Forecast

Kyiv on February 12 will see cloudy skies with occasional clear spells, light rain in places, and wet snow at night. Icy roads are expected in the capital. Winds will be southerly at 7-12 m/s. Temperatures will be around 0°C at night and +1°C to +3°C during the day. In the Kyiv region, nighttime temperatures will vary from +3°C to -2°C, with daytime highs of 0°C to +5°C.

An active cyclone is forecast to pass through Ukraine this week, bringing snow and freezing rain. The coldest period will be at the start of the week, with a significant warming trend expected closer to the weekend. This pattern of winter storms followed by rapid thaws is typical for the region in February.

The unstable conditions at the start of February may significantly impact transport, primarily due to ice on the roads. Forecast precipitation, including wet snow, could further complicate travel in some areas. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, especially in western and northern regions where precipitation is expected. While the warming trend later in the week may improve conditions, residents should be prepared for sharp and sudden weather changes.
