Ukraine Braces for Sharp Temperature Drops and Widespread Ice on February 6th

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center (Ukrgidromettsentr) has issued a weather warning for February 6th, predicting hazardous conditions including sharp temperature contrasts, precipitation, and icy roads. A prevailing southeastern and eastern wind is expected, with speeds of 7-12 m/s (approximately 16-27 mph). This type of wintry mix is common during transitional periods in Eastern Europe.

Kyiv and its surrounding region will see cloudy weather with light snow, with temperatures ranging from -6 to -8 degrees Celsius. Across the rest of the country, particularly in the east and northeast, overnight lows will plunge to between -10 and -15 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, western and southern areas will experience milder conditions, with temperatures from -4 to +1 degrees Celsius. In Zakarpattia and Crimea, daytime highs are forecast to reach a comparatively warm +6 to +11 degrees Celsius.

The unstable weather will lead to dangerous ice formation on roads across most of the country, excluding the far south. The following oblasts are specifically warned to expect glaze ice:

  • Zhytomyr
  • Rivne
  • Khmelnytskyi
  • Vinnytsia
  • Odesa
  • Mykolaiv
  • Kirovohrad

Drivers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and account for these hazardous conditions during travel.

These shifting weather patterns are likely to significantly disrupt transportation, especially in the regions anticipating ice. Motorists must remain vigilant and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents. Furthermore, the temperature fluctuations could strain the national energy grid and heating demands, an important consideration during Ukraine's winter season.
