Kyiv Police Fire Shots to Stop Fleeing Driver Under the Influence

According to Главком: On February 27, patrol officers in Kyiv's Svyatoshyn district stopped a Mazda vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver showed signs of drug intoxication, and the car itself was listed as wanted by the State Enforcement Service. Furthermore, the driver's license had been previously revoked by a court due to prior incidents of driving under the influence.

During the stop, the driver behaved aggressively and refused to undergo a sobriety test. According to police reports, while officers were documenting the violation, the driver rammed a patrol car and fled the scene. This initiated a pursuit, which concluded on Air Force Avenue. To stop the vehicle, police were compelled to use their service firearms, an action authorized under Part 4, Clause 7, Article 46 of Ukraine's 'On the National Police' law. No one was injured by the gunfire, and the driver was successfully apprehended.

Other Recent Acts of Violence

An investigative team worked at the scene to examine the circumstances of the incident. It is important to note this is not an isolated case of violence in the country. On February 24 in Lutsk, a man fired shots toward soldiers at a territorial recruitment and social support center. That attacker was also detained, his weapon confiscated and handed over to law enforcement, with no military personnel harmed. The investigation into that case is ongoing.

These events highlight ongoing challenges to public order and road safety in Ukraine, particularly involving impaired driving. The increasing aggression from some drivers and their refusal to comply with law enforcement is a growing concern. With the second incident in Lutsk, it is clear that security issues remain a high priority for both Ukrainian authorities and society at large, especially during a time of national conflict.
