Weapons Seizure in Kyiv's Dnipro District

According to Главком: Police in Kyiv's Dnipro district apprehended a 37-year-old man after residents of a residential complex on Khakhovska Street reported an armed individual on the premises around 11:10 PM. Patrol units and officers from the No. 1 Special Purpose Police Regiment responded to the scene. The man, who was renting an apartment in the building, showed signs of intoxication at the time of his arrest.

A subsequent search of his apartment uncovered the following arsenal:

  • A Colt M-4 carbine,
  • An Escort Magnum BTS12 hunting shotgun,
  • Approximately 200 rounds of ammunition.

Investigators from the Dnipro District Police Department have initiated criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 263 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. This charge carries a potential prison sentence of three to seven years. This incident highlights ongoing challenges with illegal weapons in Ukraine, a country with a complex history of civilian armament.

Separate Ammunition Trafficking Arrest in Kyiv Region

In a separate case, another 37-year-old man was detained in the Bila Tserkva district of the Kyiv region for the illegal sale of ammunition. The suspect first sold ammunition for 7,000 hryvnias and later conducted a second transaction involving two grenades, UZRGM-2 fuses, and 100 rounds of 7.62mm caliber ammunition for 6,000 hryvnias.

In response to these events, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced it will initiate consultations on draft legislation concerning civilian firearms. Discussions with members of parliament, experts, and the public are scheduled to begin next week.

These incidents underscore the urgency of addressing weapons circulation in Ukraine, particularly against a backdrop of increasing firearm-related incidents among the civilian population. The Ministry's initiative to review civilian gun laws could represent a significant step toward regulating the situation and ensuring public safety. It is crucial that any new legislation balances security needs with the rights of citizens.

This recent incident in Kyiv is part of a larger pattern of illegal arms activities in Ukraine. For instance, a man was recently apprehended in the Bila Tserkva district for attempting to sell grenades and ammunition, raising concerns about the rising tide of arms trafficking in the region.
