Poland Set to Overhaul Child Benefit System: Single Application with Automatic Renewals by 2027

Reform of the 800+ Program

According to ХВИЛЯ: Poland is preparing a major overhaul of its 800+ child benefit program, introducing a one-time application principle. Announced by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy, the changes are scheduled to take effect on June 1, 2027. A draft law governing these reforms will be reviewed in the second quarter of 2026.

Under the new rules, parents or legal guardians will need to submit a benefit application only once-during the initial enrollment for a child. Payments will then automatically renew for each subsequent period, greatly streamlining access to financial support. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will manage this automation and handle the technical side of the process. The system will automatically verify recipient data against existing state databases, aiming to cut red tape and improve payment efficiency.

Expanded Eligibility for Support

The proposed changes also broaden the pool of eligible applicants. The document explicitly grants benefit rights to individuals providing permanent care for a child under a court order. However, recipients must still notify ZUS themselves about any major changes in family status or place of residence.

Until June 2027, the current benefit calculation process will remain unchanged. To ensure continuous payments under the existing system, applications must be submitted annually by April 30. This shift toward automation is a logical step in Poland's broader strategy to digitize public services. Once the law is finalized in 2026, the Polish government is expected to launch a widespread information campaign about the new rules.

The 800+ program reform is part of Poland's efforts to make social benefits more efficient and reduce administrative hurdles for recipients. Automating the process could significantly ease the lives of families with children and make the social security system more transparent.
