Two potential sites in western Poland are under consideration for the facility, which is planned to accommodate roughly 5,000 American service members and their families. The US has yet to make a final decision on the base, with a report expected by November 1 and a conclusive determination to follow a strategic review.

Magdalena Sobkowiak-Charneck, Poland’s Deputy Minister of Defense, emphasized that the scale of the project necessitates special legislation, as it essentially involves constructing a small city.

“We need to draft a specific law to speed up the base’s construction and clearly define the responsibilities of involved agencies,” she explained.

She added that the American side has already reviewed the proposed locations and shared their assessment with Washington. “Based on that feedback, we will continue our work,” Sobkowiak-Charneck noted.

Patriot Missile Production and Airspace Violations

In addition, Poland is pursuing the domestic production of US Patriot missiles. Negotiations concerning the establishment of a service center and manufacturing capabilities for the Patriots are independent of decisions related to Ukraine and represent a significant step toward bolstering Poland’s defense infrastructure.

Poland has also faced airspace incursions recently. On September 23 at 11:08 a.m., a Russian Mi-8 helicopter violated Polish airspace north of the town of Braniewo. Earlier, on August 20, a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft reportedly breached Finnish airspace by up to 4.7 nautical miles for approximately three minutes. Finland’s Border Guard is currently investigating the incident and has summoned the Russian ambassador for explanations.

These developments highlight Poland’s proactive measures to strengthen its security through deeper military cooperation with the US, while remaining vigilant to potential threats from neighboring countries.
