Poland Considers Stripping Zelensky of Its Highest Honor Over Ukrainian Insurgent Army Ties
Polish President's Proposal
According to Главком: Polish President Karol Nawrocki has called for a review of whether to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelensky. This move stems from Ukraine's decision to bestow the honorary name 'Heroes of the UPA' upon the Special Operations Center 'North' of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. A meeting of the Order of the White Eagle chapter is scheduled for June 8.
The Order of the White Eagle stands as Poland's most prestigious state honor. Zelensky received this award on April 5, 2023, during a visit to Warsaw, where it was presented by then-President Andrzej Duda. Nawrocki argues that Ukraine's action has supplied 'Russian propaganda with excellent material and plenty of fuel.' He stated,
'I view this decision very critically'

Poland-UK Security Partnership
Separately, London and Warsaw have signed a new security agreement that includes:
- expanded military cooperation,
- development of air defense systems,
- joint efforts against cyberattacks.
The agreement was signed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London.
Thus, the June 8 meeting is set to be a pivotal event that could reshape ties between Poland and Ukraine over this contentious award.
The potential stripping of Zelensky's Order of the White Eagle highlights growing friction between Ukraine and Poland, particularly around historical memory and political decisions. This issue carries serious implications for bilateral relations, especially as both nations share security interests amid the heightened conflict with Russia. How events unfold may influence cooperation between Kyiv and Warsaw, as well as Poland's international stance.
As tensions rise over the potential revocation of Zelensky's honor, it's crucial to consider the broader implications for regional security cooperation. Notably, during the recent Bucharest Nine Summit, Zelensky met with Poland’s President, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between the two nations despite their historical disputes.
