The Passing of Mircea Lucescu

According to Главком: The football world is in mourning following the death of the legendary player and manager Mircea Lucescu on April 7, 2024, at the age of 81. His remarkable career spanned over half a century, earning him acclaim for his achievements on both sides of the touchline. Born in Bucharest on July 29, 1945, Lucescu's most iconic period came during his long tenure with Shakhtar Donetsk, where he managed the club from May 17, 2004, until May 2016. He is widely regarded as the architect of modern Shakhtar and one of the most successful foreign managers in Ukrainian football history.

Achievements and Legacy

Under Lucescu's leadership, Shakhtar Donetsk achieved unprecedented success, including:

  • Winning the UEFA Cup in the 2008/09 season;
  • Securing the Ukrainian Premier League title eight times;
  • Claiming the Ukrainian Cup on six occasions;
  • Lifting the Ukrainian Super Cup seven times.

He also guided the team to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season. After his time with Shakhtar, Lucescu managed Dynamo Kyiv from July 2020 to November 2023, where he won a domestic double-the league title and the Ukrainian Cup-in his very first season.

His playing career was equally distinguished. Lucescu represented Dinamo Bucharest from 1964 to 1990 and Corvinul Hunedoara from 1979 to 1983, winning six Romanian league titles and the Romanian Cup. He earned 65 caps for the Romanian national team, scoring 10 goals and captaining the side at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Lucescu also managed the national team on two separate occasions: from 1981 to 1986 and again from August 2024.

His final days were marked by serious health complications. During a Romanian national team gathering in 2026, Lucescu lost consciousness. On the Friday before his passing, his heart stopped twice, and by Sunday he had been placed in a medically induced coma. For his immense contributions, he was awarded the Order of Merit, First Class, by Ukraine and was made an honorary citizen of both Donetsk and Bucharest.

Mircea Lucescu's death represents a profound loss for global football, leaving behind an indelible legacy as both a player and a master tactician. Renowned for his strategic brilliance and his ability to nurture young talent, his influence on Ukrainian football, particularly through his transformative work with Shakhtar, is immeasurable. His passing will be commemorated with various tributes honoring his lasting impact on the sport and society.

In light of Lucescu's recent hospitalization due to serious health issues, concerns were growing about his ability to lead the national team in upcoming matches. His condition had raised questions just days before his passing, emphasizing the challenges he faced in his final days.
