Ukraine Closes 1000 Cemeteries for Memorial Days, Adds Kyiv Transport Routes
Heightened Security Measures at Cemeteries
According to Главком: Ukrainian law enforcement is increasing security around cemeteries starting April 17th due to upcoming memorial days and the persistent threat of landmines. To accommodate visitors, Kyiv will organize additional public transport routes to city cemeteries from April 19th to 22nd. These memorial days, observed a week after Orthodox Easter, are a traditional time for families to honor the deceased.
Cemetery Closures in Frontline Regions
Cemeteries remain closed to visitors in several frontline regions, including Kherson, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk oblasts. In total, approximately 1,000 cemeteries in combat-affected areas are inaccessible. This decision was made by military administrations to ensure civilian safety.
“Traditionally, a week after Easter, we honor the memory of the dead. This involves large gatherings of citizens and clergy at cemeteries. Accordingly, police are already enhancing security measures around such sites from today.”
Anatolii Seredynskyi, law enforcement representative
He further emphasized that “this is primarily due to the continuing risks associated with the discovery of explosive ordnance and the mine threat.”
The heightened security and widespread closures underscore the ongoing dangers of the war and the presence of unexploded ordnance. Citizens are urged to consider these circumstances when planning visits and to follow law enforcement guidance to avoid danger. This situation highlights the critical importance of safety during periods of mass gatherings, especially during traditional memorial observances.
As the authorities ramp up security for the upcoming memorial days, it is essential to remain informed about the overall safety measures being implemented across the country. In a similar context, police are also enhancing their presence and conducting spot checks during the Easter celebrations to ensure public safety.
