According to НВ — Техно: The 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered the nuclear crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant. Since then, more than 53,000 people involved in the cleanup have received radiation doses above a crucial safety limit. Japan's government has confirmed 17 serious occupational illnesses linked to this work, including eight cases of leukemia and nine malignant tumours affecting the respiratory, digestive, or thyroid systems. At least two workers are reported to have died from these conditions.
In the two years immediately after the disaster, over 600 individuals exceeded the annual exposure cap of 50 mSv. Nevertheless, the average yearly dose per worker dropped from 21.6 mSv in 2010 to 1.7 mSv in 2025. In that year, the collective dose for Fukushima Daiichi staff stood at 20.97 sieverts, while the four-reactor Takahama plant recorded a collective dose of 2.22 sieverts.
Water release and future outlook
Since August 2023, TEPCO has discharged 170,000 tonnes of treated water into the ocean across 22 discharge cycles. The ALPS filtration system reportedly removes more than 60 radioactive isotopes, with the exception of tritium. Full dismantling of the reactors and decommissioning of the site is planned to be completed by 2041–2051.
