Over 580 Runners Join Race for the Cure Inside Blockbuster Mall Shelter in Ukraine
Race for the Cure Charity Run in Ukraine
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On September 27, 2026, Ukraine hosted the Race for the Cure charity run, dedicated to supporting women battling breast cancer. For the very first time, the event took place within the shelter of Kyiv’s Blockbuster Mall, marking a significant move to ensure participant safety. More than 580 runners from Kyiv and Lviv came together, collectively taking over 2.6 million steps. The run successfully raised 514,296 hryvnias, which will fund psychological support groups for women who have faced this illness. Fundraising efforts will continue through the end of October 2026.
Event Coordination and Safety Measures
The Inspiration Family charity foundation organized the event. Originally planned for an outdoor location in Kyiv, the race was relocated to the shelter just weeks before to guarantee the safety of all involved. The course was set up with full lighting and ventilation, adhering strictly to safety guidelines. Additionally, an online participation option was provided to broaden access.
“This year’s Race for the Cure is the first worldwide to be held inside a shelter. We chose to maintain an in-person format because it’s about more than fundraising or running - it’s about community,” said Georgiy Akimov, the foundation’s executive director.
The run also featured notable personalities including:
- Irina Lishchynska
- Iryna Herashchenko
- Marichka Padalko
- Orysia Demianuk
Olympic silver medalist Irina Lishchynska served as an inspiring figure for many participants. Hanna Uzlova, president of Inspiration Family and a breast cancer survivor in remission for 10 years, highlighted the event’s deeper purpose:
“Events like this are less about fundraising and more about building community and offering support - connecting people with shared experiences,” Uzlova emphasized.
October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Race for the Cure, held in over 30 countries, plays a key role in raising awareness and supporting women fighting this disease.
This year’s run in Ukraine not only raised vital funds but also strengthened a sense of unity and mutual support among participants. The relocation to a shelter reflects how society is adapting to current challenges, creating a safe space for both activity and connection. Continued fundraising through October underscores ongoing commitment to this important cause.
In addition to charity runs, the spirit of community and resilience is evident in various athletic endeavors across Ukraine. For instance, Andriy Hrechany is set to attempt a record-breaking marathon while donning full firefighter gear, weighing over 20 kg. Such events not only highlight individual achievements but also inspire collective support for important causes, reinforcing the unbreakable spirit of the nation.
