Poroshenko Urges Parliament to Reinstate Anti-Corruption Strategy, Highlights Bipartisan U.S. Support
Petro Poroshenko Addresses the Ukrainian Parliament
According to 5 канал: During his speech in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's fifth president Petro Poroshenko called for the reinstatement of the Anti-Corruption Strategy bill, which the parliamentary majority recently removed from the agenda. He emphasized the critical need to combat corruption and secure bipartisan backing from the United States, while also stressing the urgent necessity for a ceasefire. Currently, the parliament is focused on legislation related to basic social assistance and amendments to the Tax Code, with the anti-corruption strategy notably absent from discussions.
Poroshenko identified corruption as one of Ukraine’s primary internal threats alongside external aggression.
“Who else is Ukraine’s main enemy besides Putin? Corruption. I don’t understand why the Anti-Corruption Strategy isn’t on the floor right now. Yesterday, we were told to pass a law on national minorities, but what about ensuring the independence of anti-corruption agencies? We demand the Anti-Corruption Strategy be brought back to the chamber,”
he asserted.
Calls for U.S. Support and Immediate Ceasefire
Poroshenko also stressed the importance of maintaining strong U.S. support, saying:
“We cannot afford to lose the United States. I’ve been warning since February 2025, after the Oval Office crisis, that it’s vital for Ukraine’s survival to maintain bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress and the backing of the American people.”
He highlighted the crucial role of diplomacy during these challenging times.
He expressed hope for an immediate ceasefire, noting: “Ukraine is interested in stopping the fighting. At last, we are hearing this from the authorities.” His remarks come amid parliamentary debates that exclude the anti-corruption strategy, sparking concern within political circles.
At present, the Verkhovna Rada’s priorities remain focused on social welfare legislation and tax reforms, while anti-corruption efforts are sidelined.
Poroshenko’s address underscores the vital role that anti-corruption initiatives play in securing Ukraine’s stability amid ongoing external threats. His demand to return the Anti-Corruption Strategy to parliamentary consideration reflects growing public alarm over corruption risks that could undermine national security. As the legislature concentrates on social issues, ensuring anti-corruption reforms remain at the forefront is essential-not only for domestic governance but also for sustaining international alliances, particularly with the United States.
