U.S. Ambassador Witnesses Aftermath of Overnight Russian Assault on Kyiv Firsthand
Kyiv Under Attack: May 24 Strikes
According to Главком: In the early hours of May 24, Russia launched a combined missile and drone assault on Kyiv, causing widespread destruction across the city. Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, Julie Davis, personally visited the impact sites to assess the damage from this act of aggression. The strikes targeted museums, subway stations, residential buildings, and other civilian infrastructure, including the offices of international media outlets such as Deutsche Welle and UNIAN, as well as research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
'On the night of May 24, Russia attacked Kyiv, striking museums, metro stations, homes, and other civilian sites, triggering massive devastation throughout the region. Today, I saw some of the consequences of this attack with my own eyes. Deliberate strikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure are unacceptable.' Julie Davis
The residence of Albania's ambassador to Ukraine also sustained damage during the assault.
Global Condemnation and Diplomatic Moves
In response, Ukraine has demanded an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, along with a joint session of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and the OSCE Permanent Council. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán condemned the attack, stressing the need for a firm and proportional response to aggression that seeks to compensate for a lack of military progress through terror against civilians.
Beyond the physical harm to Kyiv's infrastructure, this attack highlights a disturbing escalation of violence in the region. The international community's reaction-including calls for immediate action from Ukraine and other nations-underscores how Russia's aggression is raising serious alarms about global security. The trajectory of these events could significantly reshape diplomatic ties between countries and the broader security landscape in Europe.
The situation in Kyiv remains precarious as officials warn of the possibility of further attacks. Following the devastating overnight strikes, Russia's spokesperson has indicated that new strikes could be imminent, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and the stability of the region. As the international community reacts to these threats, the urgency for a coordinated response is becoming increasingly apparent.
