The Ambassador of Ukraine left the event in Israel due to the presence of a Russian diplomat
Incident at a diplomatic event in Israel
According to Главком: The Ambassador of Ukraine in Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, left the diplomatic event that took place near the Western Wall due to the presence of the Russian diplomat Anatoly Viktorov. The event, organized by Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gidon Saar, was dedicated to lighting a Hanukkah candle after the terrorist attack in Sydney.
28 ambassadors and heads of missions from various countries were present at the event. Among them, besides Ukraine and Russia, were diplomats from:
- Czech Republic
- Chile
- Ethiopia
- Thailand
- Ecuador
- Panama
- Nepal
- Georgia
- Kazakhstan
The presence of the Russian ambassador caused discontent on the part of Viktorov, who expressed his remarks regarding the invitation of the Ukrainian diplomat to the event.
If a diplomatic event were held in Kyiv and the head of the Iranian embassy was supposed to be present, we would have alerted the Israeli ambassador not to put him in such an awkward position. Yevhen Korniychuk
This incident illustrates the complex diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia, which remain tense amid an ongoing conflict. The presence of the Russian diplomat at an event dedicated to memory and support caused discomfort for the Ukrainian side, indicating the sensitivity of issues related to international relations. Similar situations can have a significant impact on diplomatic relations between countries, as well as on public opinion in both states.
