According to Главком: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ukraine has opened a book of condolences following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's Supreme Leader. The book will be available to the public on March 4, 5, and 6, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Such books are a traditional diplomatic gesture of mourning, but this instance occurs within a highly charged political context.

Background of Diplomatic Tensions Between Ukraine and Iran

Relations between Ukraine and Iran have been severely strained for several years. A major point of contention was the January 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752. Iranian military forces shot down the aircraft, killing all 176 people on board, including 11 Ukrainian citizens. Iran later admitted the plane was struck by an Iranian air defense missile.

Further deterioration followed Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Iran began supplying Russia with Shahed attack drones and other weaponry. In response, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Iranian companies and individuals involved in the production and supply of arms to Russia.
