Tourist Arrivals Drop in Croatia, but Officials Say Not to Worry

According to УНІАН — Туризм: In June 2025, Croatia saw a 7% decrease in tourist arrivals compared to the same month in 2024, while overnight stays slipped by 6%. This marks the second straight year of a summer downturn for the Adriatic nation, which relies heavily on tourism as a key economic driver. Germany, Croatia’s largest source market, posted particularly steep losses: arrivals from Germany tumbled 36% and overnight stays fell 28%. In contrast, visitor counts from the Czech Republic and Poland remained flat year-on-year.

Despite the gloomy figures, Tourism Minister Tonči Glavina urged calm. He pointed to an 11% rise in arrivals during May 2025 as evidence of positive momentum.

“Tourist flows can’t be judged month by month because they shift according to public holidays and school breaks in source markets. Looking at the first half of the year as a whole, we can be satisfied given the conditions of this season,” Glavina stated.

Still, some experts warn of broader implications.

“These numbers clearly point to a drop in tourism revenue for the first half of the year, since pre-season prices and earnings are much lower than during the summer peak,” commented the daily Slobodna Dalmacija.

The decline may signal changes in traveler preferences or economic and social factors affecting travel decisions. While government officials advocate taking a holistic view, the sustained drop-especially from key markets like Germany-raises questions about Croatia’s competitive position against neighboring Mediterranean destinations. For an economy so dependent on tourism, even a small downturn in arrivals can have ripple effects.

As Croatia grapples with a decline in tourist numbers, other popular destinations are experiencing a different trend. For instance, holiday package prices for Turkey and Bulgaria have significantly dropped this summer, potentially influencing travelers' choices and reshaping the regional tourism landscape. Understanding these shifts can provide valuable insights for both tourists and industry stakeholders.
