The blast was audible up to 100 kilometers from Moscow, including in Domodedovo, Chekhov, Serpukhov, Khimki, Krasnogorsk, Zelenograd, and Mytishchi. The rumble was first picked up in the suburbs and reached Moscow 30–45 seconds later. During the event, residents in private houses and apartments said walls and windows shook, while car alarms went off in large numbers across the streets. Some people claimed they could feel the ground trembling, while others did not hear anything at all.

No eyewitness reported seeing an airplane that could account for the noise. Russian monitoring resources suggested the boom might have come from a military jet, possibly the Su-35. The Russian Emergencies Ministry, however, said it had no explanation for the sound and added that no fires or structural damage had been found in Moscow. Locals also mentioned seeing smoke near a military unit in Serpukhov.
