Massive Blaze Erupts in Eastern Moscow Following Major Drone Strike
Fire Breaks Out Near Izmailovo Kremlin
According to ХВИЛЯ: A significant fire has broken out on the eastern side of Moscow, close to the Izmailovo Kremlin. The flames engulfed a stockpile of finishing materials at an open construction site. The incident occurred beneath the North-Eastern Chord bridge on Amurskaya Street, with the fire spreading across 300 square meters. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang just before the blaze ignited.
Broader Military Context
This fire comes amid an intense wave of military activity, notably the largest drone assault on the Moscow region since the start of the full-scale invasion. During the night of May 17, Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow Oil Refinery, as well as the Solnechnogorsk oil depot, Sheremetyevo Airport, and several microelectronics plants. In the town of Dedovsk, a five-story residential building was damaged, leaving three people hospitalized.
According to OSINT analysts from DroneBomber+, the drones managed to penetrate three out of four layers of Moscow's air defense shield. The Moscow region is considered the most heavily protected airspace in Russia, second only to President Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai. Ahead of Victory Day, the area received additional air defense systems drawn from across the country.
- Zelenograd, where the Elma Technopark and the Angstrem microelectronics plant were damaged;
- Kapotnya, where the Gazprom Neft oil refinery was hit;
- Solnechnogorsk, where a Transneft oil pumping station was attacked.
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi (also known as Madyar) reported that over the nights of May 16 and 17, a total of 186 fire strikes were carried out against 46 targets deep behind enemy lines. He added:
“the birds of the UAF delivered 186 fire strikes against 46 targets in the enemy's rear.”
The eastern Moscow fire is part of a broader situation unfolding in the region, where ongoing military operations and offensive actions continue to raise concerns among local residents and authorities alike.
This incident highlights the escalating conflict in the area, where military engagements are becoming more frequent. The attacks on civilian infrastructure that took place on the night of May 17 signal a shift in drone tactics, which may further increase tensions and public discontent. While the situation in the Moscow region remains under control, the challenges to the country's security system are growing increasingly urgent.
As military tensions escalate in the region, the situation is further complicated by recent attacks, including a deadly strike in the Rivne region that resulted in multiple casualties.
