Andriy and Sofia Melnyk’s Ashes Come Home

According to Главком: The ashes of Andriy Melnyk, a leader of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), along with those of his wife Sofia, are being brought back to Ukraine. Their reburial is part of a project to establish a National Pantheon of Heroes, an initiative spearheaded by Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Presidential Office. This effort aims to honor key figures in Ukraine’s struggle for independence.

Melnyk served as the second leader of the OUN and played a pivotal role in Ukraine’s liberation struggle, fighting with the UPR Army and the Sich Riflemen. In January 1918, he helped devise the plan to suppress a Bolshevik uprising at the Arsenal factory in Kyiv. He also co-organized the Halych-Bukovyna Kurin of the Sich Riflemen alongside Yevhen Konovalets. After Konovalets’ death, Melnyk took over the leadership of the OUN.

Initiative Gains Backing

The National Pantheon of Heroes project has received support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (UINM). In late March, Kyrylo Budanov convened a meeting dedicated to this initiative.

Current OUN leader Bohdan Chervak noted: ‘The return of the Melnyks to their homeland became possible thanks to the persistence of the Presidential Office, including General Kyrylo Budanov, the MFA, and the UINM.’

The repatriation of Andriy and Sofia Melnyk’s ashes marks a significant moment in commemorating outstanding Ukrainian figures and represents a key step toward building the National Pantheon of Heroes. This initiative underscores the Ukrainian state’s commitment to preserving historical memory and recognizing the contributions of heroes in the fight for Ukraine’s independence. It also has the potential to strengthen national identity and foster patriotic education for future generations.

The repatriation of Andriy and Sofia Melnyk's remains is a poignant reminder of the ongoing efforts to honor Ukraine's historical figures.
